Airport Encounter

Last Wednesday night while browsing on Facebook, I saw this link shared by a friend.

Albeit long, I decided to read the note because the title – Airline Bullying - piqued my interest.

I fly for about 6 times at the minimum to and from my hometown every year. But no, I’m far from being a jet-setter. In fact I’m a sucker of promo fares. Back in October 2010, I only spent P78.00 for a one-way airfare from Manila to Bacolod. Yes you read it right, seventy eight pesos only. The cab fare from Makati to NAIA 3 is even more expensive.

I don’t exactly remember when these promo fares started. It goes as cheap as zero as base fare. So basically, you’re flying for free! Except that you have to pay for the fuel, taxes and surcharges, terminal fees as well as baggage allowance. Indeed, almost everyone can now travel by air. Gone are the days when flying are only for the rich and famous.

Despite flying on a promo, I am fortunate for not having to experience such things as airline bullying or being bumped off from my flight. Or did I? I just simply did not allow it to happen.

I remember in April 2009, Holy Thursday, a friend and I had an early morning flight from Manila to Cagayan de Oro. I felt a little guilty because I woke up late but we still managed to be at the airport an hour before our 6:30am flight. We proceeded to the check in counter but lo and behold, the staff told us that it was already closed. It is a common knowledge that the check in counters closes 45 minutes before the flight. We were there an hour before. Why was it closed?

I kept calm and I patiently asked for an explanation. The airline staff in her annoyed tone answered back “Eh kasi overbooked po yung flight niyo. Karapatan ng airline na mag overbook. Kahit naman papasukin namin kayo sa eroplano wala din kayo mauupuan. Imomove na lang namin kayo sa next flight. Saka may libre naman kayong isang roundtrip domestic ticket eh.”

Ano daw?

I almost lost my temper. The way that she delivered her reply pissed me off. It was very sarcastic and unprofessional. I don’t like to think that it was because I looked like a cheapskate with my I-just-got-out-of-bed-look, shorts, strappy hiking sandals, and big backpack.

I know that some airlines especially budget ones tend to overbook. I do not like the practice and I’m definitely not tolerating it because as far as I was concerned, no airline rule was violated. We were there just in time, and there was no sign that the counter was already closed.

I told the staff: “Miss, I specifically chose that flight because we are following a schedule. We cannot afford to be delayed because everything else will be ruined. If you can tell me what our fault is/are, then by all means, bump us off on this flight. Apparently, you cannot because we both know there is none. And if indeed we are to blame here, why are you offering to move us on the 10am flight free of charge? FYI, I can afford to buy myself a roundtrip ticket to any local destination if I want to. Our schedule is far more important than your cheap freebie. No thanks. Call your supervisor.”

Catch is I delivered that in Filipino (Tagalog). As in malutong na tagalog. Hahaha.

I was thinking of two other friends waiting for us in CDO’s airport. I arranged for a contact who will pick us up at 8am for our white water rafting activity. From CDO, we were also scheduled to go to Bukidnon and Davao so I just cannot waste an hour or two.

Anyway, the crew was astounded I guess because she never said anything after that. She went to some guy whom I supposed was the supervisor. He looked our way but didn’t stand up. I concluded he did not want to engage in a conversation with a furious passenger.

She went back on the check in counter and said something on the crew beside her. She seemed busy with something and it was as if she was leaving her counter. She did leave.

But before she did, I told her “Anong oras na sa inyo? Wag mo kong sasabihan mamaya na boarding na at wala na kami magagawa. Bilisan mo at gawan mo ng paraan yan!”

It turned out she went to the boarding gate and offered a roundtrip ticket to any domestic destination for those two people who are willing to give out their seats and be moved to the next flight.

In the end, we were able to fly on that flight. We skipped the line on the final x-ray check up and we had to run to the gate. The plane was about to leave and why it was not surprising; we were the last ones to board.

Whew.

Lessons learned?

1.)    Be at the airport as early as possible if you’ve not availed the web check-in feature which was launched recently.

2.)    Know your rights as a passenger. Read all the fine prints in your ticket.

To the author of the article whose link I posted above, I salute her for maintaining grace and composure while dealing with such a temper-challenging incident. Good job Ms. Roxanne and I certainly hope it will never happen again. May it serve as lesson; at the same time precaution to passengers. May it also reach our airport/airline/aviation authorities to prevent similar events to happen in the future.

P.S.

Had I not been aggressive, I would have missed this. :p

Postcards from Palawan

No posts from me for almost a week now. Writer's block.

Echos lang! Haha. :p

Since I'm not in the mood to write (or maybe  it could be the lack of inspiration. Naks.) despite the backlogs I have for this blog, let me share with you this entry from my college classmate slash travel buddy slash good friend, Romel. (Click for the link at the end of this post).

It has already been an annual event for us, with our other classmates and friends Venus, Godo, MJ and Ex to spend a week or less for a local getaway. This blogpost is about our Palawan trip in August 2011. There's so much to do there so aside from the usual city tour, we also ate crocodile meat and tamilok; scuba dived; biked in their boulevard; snorkeled at Honda Bay; watched fireflies; and of course, personally saw one of the world's new 7 wonders - the Puerto Prinsesa Underground River.

We first traveled together back in August 2010 in Bicol, with another friend and classmate Hyannie. Too bad she wasn't able to join us last year. We did wakeboarding at CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC); island-hopped and rock-climbed in Caramoan; and ziplined in Legaspi, Albay with Mt. Mayon as backdrop.

I know it's not really planned but I noticed there is always a beach in our chosen destination.

Summer in August, anyone? :D

This year (guess which month?), we are set to invade Hundred Islands in Pangasinan, side-trip to Baguio, go hiking and spelunking in Sagada, and another side-trip to Bataan.

I cannot contain my excitement. This will surely be another great, and fun-filled trip with equally great and fun to be with friends! :)

Avenge on The Avengers

So yesterday, my officemates and I were supposed to watch The Avengers on the big screen. We have talked and planned about this a week ago and finally settled to see it Wednesday, May 2 so as to avoid the crowd. In fact, I volunteered to buy the movie tickets a day in advance to make sure we’ll get a good seat. We chose the 5:15pm sched because the next one’s at 8:15pm and it will be too late already.

Imagine how excited I was. I know Thor misses me so much.

Bleh.

Fine. I miss Chris Hemsworth (and his soulful eyes) so much.

But of course I miss his sexy abs more.

He is so breathtaking I remember myself stridently sipping from the large cup of soda seeing him go topless in Thor. LOL.

Nakakahiya, pero keber lang. Eh sa sexy siya eh. Ang kokontra may problema sa utak.

Nyahaha. :p

I was praying for time to move faster. But with the turn of events at work, all the excitement I was feeling vanished, replaced by severe disappointment.

At lunch time, we already knew that something was wrong with our trading system. I just didn’t expect it will take the entire afternoon to fix it.

Actually, not even because it was past 7pm by the time we were (half) done.

I am not an I.T. freak so I don’t know how to describe it in a technical way. All I know was the transactions we had for the day were “erased” and so the option was to restore the system. In short, we have to input everything again as if it’s one ordinary trading day.

We were told to wait. Kumbaga, parang hold departure order gaya ng lagi naming biruan sa office.

Patay! I promised Dei susunod kami. : /

My mind was silently protesting. Being expressive that I am, I cannot conceal my eagerness to leave and watch the movie.

Hello? 200 pesos din kaya yun! Saka, nagpunta pa kong Greenbelt kahit malakas ang ulan para lang bumili ng tickets.

Effort huh!

It was 4:30pm when Aaron (the programmer) came.

Nabuhayan ako ng loob. Sa isip-isip ko, mabilis lang siguro to!

I was literally behind him, loudly cheering and silently praying at the same time.

But to no avail. My heart was sinking; my spirit slowly dipping down.

Sometimes optimism is just not enough. Sigh.

Seeing me sad, some offered to do the “inputting” for us.  I hesitated but still went. So Badz and I left at 5:10pm (ninja moves). Hehe.

Greenbelt, without traffic, is a short 5-minute drive from the office.

We hurriedly walked to the parking area. I even texted Dei that we were on our way.

Yes! Aabot kami!

Or so I thought.

Barely a minute on the road, Badz and I were talking if we really should go watch the movie. It seems something was pulling us back. With a heavy heart, we decided to go back to the office.

Visualize this: we were already at the intersection of Makati Avenue and Ayala Avenue waiting for the green traffic sign. Just across it is Greenbelt, almost. But instead, we turned right to Ayala Avenue and right again at Paseo de Roxas driving our way back to the office building.

I called Dei telling her we can’t make it to the movie and will join them on dinner instead. She sounded as disappointed as I was.

It was my unlucky day. It felt like we were sabotaged. Seems OA but that’s how I felt, really. Haha.

Maybe I was not meant to watch.

Because guess what? It was actually a good decision that we went back.

We bought munchies and danced and chitchat and fooled around while waiting for instructions on what to do. Waiting is such an agony.

Apparently, the transactions that were affected were not only for that day, but as well as those on Monday, April 30.

Great. It meant we all have to start from scratch.

Finally, it was decided that we finish the transactions for April 30 that night and save the May 2 transactions for the next day. Coolness! I only have two! But of course, I offered to input for others who had plenty.

Few minutes later, we were finally done! Thanks Heavens!

We then headed to Greenbelt for a sumptuous greek dinner at CYMA. This is my way to avenge on fate for not letting me watch The Avengers. I needed to seal the night with the best dinner.

Madalas, pagkain lang naman talaga katapat ko. Haha.

magtitiyaga muna ako dito habang di ko pa nararating ang Santorini. :D

yummy Roka Salata

iba naiisip ko dahil sa swirl. :p

grilled pork chops

full slab baby back ribs with stuffed pepper as side dish

So, do you think I had a great dinner last night?

Aba siyempre! Lambot ng ribs!

Solb na solb! :D

Anyhoo, I or we might not have watched The Avengers whose showing I’ve long anticipated. But what is 200 pesos and Thor comparing to our call of duty? Naks. Haha.

In all honesty, the frustration I felt was momentary. I know I will not enjoy the movie as much as I would have when at the back of my mind, I was thinking of the work we left undone.

And I don't wanna be bothered with my thoughts about Thor. Nyahaha.

Besides, I can always watch it anytime, probably this weekend.

Tee Hee! :p

P.S.

Lord, sana wala na pong aberya this time.  Salamat po! :D

Sayang lang these tickets below are useless now. :(

unused tickets namin ni Badz. 400 petot down the drain. :(

When All Else Fails... RUN!!!

There have been many predictions about the end of the world. In fact, there have also been various movies shown having that theme.

So imagine the world is about to end and there is a zombie apocalypse.

Who are you gonna call? Ghostbusters! Este Zombie-busters! LOL.

Kidding aside, should there be a zombie outbreak, what are you gonna do? Instincts say: RUN!

Run, sprint, crawl, and jump if you have to.  And that was exactly what we did at Outbreak Manila last April 14.

Though in real life, I might just find some place to hide. Hehe

It was a 5-kilometer fun run inspired after Run for Your Lives in the U.S.

We had to protect our “lives” from the zombies, represented by 3 red flags stapled on a belt in our waist. The goal is to have at least one flag at the end of the finish line. The top 40 fastest runners will get a medal.

Here are some pictures:

we were early kaya pictorial muna. ang aangas! haha

hello sunrise! :)

warming up

kami na next!

bring it on! :p
wave 10 - 7:45 AM
let the running begin!
what's so funny zombies? LOL. ayun ako oh! :p

almost there.. almost! :D
the survivors, the spectator, and the zombies :D
oo na, nanghiram lang ako ng medal :(
yes i did! :)

I was wearing a dress since assuming there will indeed be an outbreak, it must come unexpectedly that you wouldn’t have the time to change into your running outfit. Who knows, you might be asleep in your boxers, or worse, you might even be taking a bath. Hehe

By the way, have I mentioned the run was star-studded and action packed? Guess who we ran with?

The Avengers!
The Flush, este Flash! :p
Ronald McDonald and Spidey!

And of course, if there are Zombies.... there are also the Plants!

kaso baliktad, di sila lumalaban. haha

It is also worth congratulating the “zombies” for living up to their roles. Their costumes and make ups were all so cool especially the guy who played as Michael Jackson. Plus, it’s no joke to be staying under the angry heat of the sun for 6 hours.

thriller!
zombie sailormoon with jacko
no other zombie can be more famous than him

Kudos to all the organizers of Outbreak Manila. I hope this will become an annual event. Running has never been this challenging, and FUN! :D

Hello-Yellow-Pillow!

Mondays, being the start of the work week, is my least favorite day.

But April 16, 2012 is an exception. This cute heart-shaped pillow cheerfully greeted me that morning. The best part is - it came in my favorite color! Sunshiny yellow! Yippeee! :)

This was a gift from Mel, a friend and colleague. Uhmmm, actually I forced her to buy it for me because she have one herself - exactly the same, only in pink. :p

I use it as a cushion, when I feel cold, or when I take a nap after lunch.

It's so soft and fluffy! Aahhh.. it's perfect!

Thanks mucho Melissa! You're the best evah! Haha. :D

with my cute pillow and big eyebags.. errr.. big smile. :D

With the HFS Boys

It’s been almost 4 years since I last saw them. Thanks to Facebook we sometimes get the chance to exchange hi’s and hello’s.

It was a snap decision to see them as we finally decided to pursue the meet up at around 8pm, Saturday night. We shared stories from grade school, and laughed at the things we did with our young and innocent minds. Lol.

Everything is just different now. We are all grown up.  We all have our own lives. Yet, they will always be the same boys I played sikyu-sikyu with at Holy Family School’s grounds more than 13 years ago.

Overall, it was a great night spent over 6 buckets of beer, pork sisig and fries. There was also a bonus cup of coffee and frappe on a rainy Sunday afternoon the following day.

Perhaps the attendance will be much bigger next time if it was planned. I hope time comes for the entire class to have a reunion where everyone will be present. The possibility of that happening soon is very little though since some are based abroad already. But, who knows? Regardless if we’re 25 or 40 years old, it would be great to see the people whom we spent the longest time in school with.

Thanks Kenn, Janboi, Martin, and Ronnie. :)

Tani next time may girls na nga iban. hehe

Hello again, Bob!

Nope, I’m not referring to a person. I’m saying hello again to one of my favorite hairstyles – the Bob. :D

I came up with a spontaneous decision of slashing my hair into half. I’ve long been considering having a haircut but not as drastic as the one I just had. I always liked my hair long but I can’t stand the uneven color of my hair anymore, causing it to be very dry. Eww, right? :D

The last time I cut my hair short that it falls way above the shoulders was back in October 2010. It was a rather impulsive decision which surprised many. Don’t ask why. Lol. But it’s definitely one I never regret. In fact I loved it that I’m brave enough to try sporting it again.

Less than a year and half ago, and 15 lbs. lighter. Haha.

Sorry, walang ibang matinong pic. :p
After it grew a few inches
I am also quite careful in picking a hairstyle that’s why I always play safe. But as much as I am particular with the style, I am even pickier with the stylist. Thing is, I am not willing to spend 500 pesos or even 300 for it. It’s the usual fee for senior stylists here in the metro. I say that’s ridiculously expensive. Lol.

Oh wait, I did try going to an expensive salon raved about in various forums to have my hair permed in 2009. I spent about 3,000 pesos for it plus 4 long butt-numbing hours but only went home disappointed. That was the worst decision I ever made concerning my hair. I said to myself, never again! It was not worth it.

Right after it was permed kaya it still looked "OK". Few hours later mukha na lang akong sinabunutan. LOL

So since I always go home in Bacolod, minimum of 4 times a year, I chose to get my hair done there. It’s way cheaper. Hehe.

Mom recommended a stylist. We went to the salon but he wasn’t there as it was his rest day. Since I badly wanted to have my hair cut that day, I decided to go to my second option - David’s Salon at SM City Bacolod and requested for Ana per my aunt’s suggestion.

I initially planned for a haircut alone but ended up pampering myself some more and had a mani-pedi and a new hair color!

The first strike of the scissors on my nape and right under the ears, I was like: “Shit, nasobrahan ata! Wala na ko makapang buhok. Waaahh parang ang iksi!” I wasn’t facing a mirror then since I was also getting my nails done so it made me more anxious. Imagine how I felt when mom came back and said, “Nubo-nubo man na!” with her eyebrows almost crossing each other. Haha. Nubo means short, nubo-nubo means very very short. But I acted calm as if I actually know it and that it’s ok. Deep inside I was praying it won’t end up too short. Lol.
Ana was unbelievably fast. I’m not sure but in less than 5 minutes she was done with my haircut and proceeded to color my hair. When I finally got the chance to see myself in the mirror, I tried to take a picture and I kept convincing myself that it wouldn’t be a disaster. Lol.

Here it is.

2 hours more and they’re done.

Result? I felt weird but I actually liked it. Venus, who followed me there to have her brows threaded, signaled her approval. I’m relieved. Hehe.

I recommend Ana as she was fast but very precise. She was the one who suggested my hair style and color after I tried explaining what I wanted to achieve. She got it right with very minimal instructions. Surprisingly, the length was perfect.

Here’s a shot of my brand new hair a few minutes later with my cutie friends, Venus and Cherry.  :)

Bacolod, I Keep Coming Back!

The reasons why I keep coming back to Bacolod despite the increase in fuel surcharge on plane fares and the exorbitant terminal fees can be summarized by 3 F’s.

F for Family – this is given. I value my independence but there is still no place like home.

F for Food! Bacolod is such a haven for food lovers. Who haven’t heard about Chicken Inasal? And there’s also Calea’s Cakes catching up on the fame for the best-tasting yet affordable cakes. Their Imported Chocolate Cake is a personal favorite.

F for Friends – Oh how I love them! Every trip home is not complete without me seeing my friends. And I’m glad that they always make time for me. Though we stay connected thru various social networking sites and mobile technology, it is different when we bond and share laughter over lunch/dinner.

In our case, we don’t only eat, we sing!

And this 3 F’s can further be described into one word which also starts with F --- FUN!
